Candidiasis, more commonly known as a yeast infection, is an infection caused by a group of microscopic fungi.  These fungi are actually yeast and there are more than 20 different species of Candida with the most common being Candida albicans.  Yeast can live on every surface of our bodies, but in certain conditions thrive to the point of infection.  Conditions where these fungi thrive are in warm and moist areas such as the vagina, underarms, under breasts, or under diapers in babies.

Yeast Infection Causes

  • The most common reason for yeasts to overtake their environment is due to antibiotics or steroid use.  The most likely place for this overgrowth to happen is within the vagina and happens to be the most common reason for vaginal burning and itching.  A yeast infection of the vagina is usually accompanied by discharge.
  • There are a handful of other contributing factors like pregnancy, menstruation, sperm, diabetes, and birth control which can drastically change the environment and cause a yeast infection.  The likelihood of a yeast infection is also more common after menopause.
  • People who have a weakened immune system due to cancer treatments, steroids, or diseases such as AIDs, are all more susceptible to candidal infections.  A infection throughout the entire body can be life threatening.  The blood, brain, eye, kidney, and heart are the most commonly infected.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

  • Vaginal yeast infection symptoms are a white cheesy discharge that typically iteches and irritates the vagina and the surrounding outter tissues.  Pain during intercourse and / or buring during urination are also common.
  • Thrush, oral candidiasis, symptoms are thick, white lacy patches on the top of a red base which forms on the tongue, palate, or anywhere inside the mouth.  Occasionally these patches look like milk curds, but are not easily wiped away.  Thrush makes it very painful and difficult to eat, and care should be given to ensure dehydration does not become an issue.

Yeast Infection Treatment

Most candidal / yeast infections can be treated at home with an over-the-counter medication.  In the event the immune system has been weakened consulting your doctor is mandatory.

  • Common over-the-counter medication to treat yeast infections include Monistat, Vagistat, Femstat, and Femizole.  Each of these creams are massaged into the vagina or surrounding areas for several days depending on the medication.
  • An anti-fungal agent can be used around the mouth to cure thrush.  Excellent oral hygiene should be used.  Any objects put into a child’s mouth should be sterilized.
